“You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose.”

~ Indira Gandhi

When you watch champion athletes at peak performance you can’t help but notice their single pointed focus on only what they’re doing in the present moment. In a state of heightened awareness, only accessible with a still mind, they are able to take in information from all around them, instantly know what their next move must be, and execute it flawlessly. It’s all effortless.

This heightened awareness is called presence, presence of mind.

Practice it always — while working, walking, washing dishes, relaxing, imagining, interacting — and enjoy the purity of life flowing through you.

“Any desire of the heart is there for you to discover and manifest. Whatever inspires you is an aspect of yourself. Be precise about what you admire in someone and find that part in yourself. If you have the aspiration to be something, it’s because you have the potential to manifest what you are seeing.”

Excerpted from the book Dark Side of the Light Chasers by Debbie Ford

Dig down for the very essence of what inspires you. It doesn’t matter whether the source was a dream, a vision, or something you admire in someone else, that inspiration is your heart speaking to you. This is the voice you must obey.

Don’t be afraid, my friend, it is highlighting your path to happiness.

6/6/2012 – Daily Dose of Inspiration

“The happiness of one’s own heart alone cannot satisfy the soul; one must try to include, as necessary to one’s happiness, the happiness of others.”

~ Paramahansa Yogananda

While on an intellectual level the notion of being independent and self-sufficient may seem admirable, the isolation these qualities bestow on the heart level is far from desirable.

At heart we are social creatures. Our need for connection with others is real and deep seated.

Ever noticed how the quickest and most effective way to make yourself feel better is to help make someone else feel better? Not so sure? Why not try it?

Oh, and please let the favor be returned in kind. Help make someone else’s day!

“Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. It is the result of long and patient effort in self-control. Its presence is an indication of ripened experience, and of a more than ordinary knowledge of the laws and operations of thought.”

Excerpted from the book As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

Hidden in the brilliant formula that is Bikram Yoga is the subtle fine tuning of the mind. You may think of the class as a workout, but you cannot help but develop your ability to concentrate along with your faith, self-control, determination and patience at the same time. This is how, as Bikram says, you turn your mind back into your best friend instead of your worst enemy.

The blessings of a calm mind, make every ounce of sweat worth it, wouldn’t you agree?

“Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.”

~ Leo Buscaglia

How do you feel when you worry? Do you feel nervous? Anxious? Scared? Perhaps the feeling is different depending on what you’re worried about. There’s one thing that’s for certain though, you never feel good when you worry.

Isn’t it amazing how our thoughts so directly affect the way we feel? You know what’s even more amazing? Their influence doesn’t stop there. The more intently we think a thought, the more power it gathers until eventually it becomes reality.

It’s a pretty straight forward process really — think a thought until it manifests. But there’s one thing you should always keep in mind, my friend, if the thought doesn’t feel good, the manifestation will feel even worse.

6/3/2012 – Daily Dose of Inspiration

How can you always be happy? Forget about “always” – then you will be happy.

In always wanting to be comfortable, you become lazy.
In always wanting perfection, you become angry.
In always wanting to be rich, you become greedy.

Fear arises when we do not realize that only life is for always.

~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Relax, my friend, by demanding absolutes you just set yourself up for disappointment. Notice how you feel when things aren’t the way you like them. Are you happy? Is it when you accomplish your goals that you’ll feel satisfied?

Try instead appreciating the process of growth. You’ll find happiness is greatest by accepting what is and being excited about what is to come. This is the joy of living.

6/2/2012 – Daily Dose of Inspiration

“Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.”

~ Voltaire

Most misfortunes are really blessings in disguise; we just don’t have enough foresight to see what they’re making possible in the long run.

Life is change, transformation. Our troubles arise when we resist this process. Can you see how by releasing the old you make room for the new? Can you see how challenges prepare you for your bigger and better life ahead of you?

Always keep in mind that your thoughts are creating your future. In every moment you have a choice, you can either dwell on the negatives or you can look for what you want in their stead.

The path to happiness is simple:  focus on what feels best.

“Hatha Yoga takes more courage than any physical activity in the world…
It’s just you and nothing but you, standing in one spot frozen like a
statue with no place to go for help or excuse or scapegoat except
inward.

“Maybe it’s a little bit frightening at first to have no help except
what is inside you, <<First Name>>. But don’t fright, don’t scare. It is so
peaceful in there, so good for your mind and your body to forget the
outside world for this time you do Yoga.

“You hear my words now, but I know you don’t understand them yet.
That’s okay. You got to feel the understanding happening in yourself,
like a flower unfolding, to understand.”

Excerpted from the book Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class by Bikram
Choudhury

Have you ever noticed how your fears arise just as you are about to to
take a big step forward in your personal growth, <<First Name>>? And
usually, the scarier it is, the more important the growth. These
are the scenarios you look back on and say to yourself, “If only I’d
known how amazing it would be…”

The unknown can be very scary, there’s no doubt, but you’ll never
know if that cat around the corner is a Bengal tiger or just a kitten
if you don’t at least take a peak.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’”

~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Fear is a tricky thing, it cannot survive without you feeding it. Whether you run from it, sweep it under the rug, or simply allow it to be, your fear controls you.

But the moment you face your fear, you recoup the power you had been feeding to it.

This is self-empowerment at its finest and well worth the sweat!
