“We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.”
~ Carl R. Rogers, On Becoming a Person
Oh, my friend, we’re so good at noticing everything that’s not right. We have this ache and pain…so-and-so always behaves that way…we say ‘I’ll never get this right’, etc…. The flaws are so obvious we can’t ignore them. We feel we have to change them, whether they’re within us or outside of us.
But that doesn’t help us change. The more we fight, resist or try to change something the worse it gets. So, yes, acceptance is the magic balm that causes the suffering to dissipate. But the interesting thing is that once it does, we’re likely to forget that the ailment or struggle was ever there in the first place.
Our natural state is one of ease and flow. It’s only when things aren’t right that we take notice. So remember, my friend, what is is what is. By accepting it you allow it to change.
