This sweet, dessert like fruit has so many good things about it that we felt we it was worth bringing it to your attention.
Dates are rich in vitamins and minerals–too many to list them all here, but the highlights are: Vitamin A, B6, B-complex, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium (more than in a banana!), and even some Iron. They have a high carbohydrate count, protein, fiber, and over 20 different amino acids making them great for the digestive system. Each date averages only 23 calories. They have natural sugar in the form of glucose and fructose allowing for immediate absorption and energy use by the body, and contain minimal amounts of fat and no cholesterol. They are good and good for you!
Next time you are craving something sweet but don’t want to compromise your health, reach for some dates. Their sweetness and wide variety of nutritious elements make for an excellent pick-me-up and take the edge off of hunger.
Try chopping up a date and some walnuts or pecans to add to your salad in place of candied nuts–much less expensive and much more nutritious!
